Christ the Anchor of Our Life
2024RTWW 3: Christ the Anchor of Our Life
Scripture: Hebrews 6:19-20
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
Reflection
In the past few months, I’ve found myself especially struggling with my faith and struggling to trust in God. I would question his plan for me in the short term, and subsequently his greater plan for my life as a whole. I would interrogate God about what he was doing in my life, leading me to question if he was even present in my life at all. Although when I am in the deepest depths of my worries and pain, I fail to see God’s light and his plan, when I surface and get a chance to catch my breath, I remember the way in which I am to see my problems. To see Christ as the immovable anchor to which I cling, whether bobbing on the surface or sinking into the deep, Christ is there all the way along. I’m sure just like me, you also have anxieties about your future - how does God intend to use your life? How will he shape you? What type of person will you become?
We tend to make up our own plans for ourselves, to lean on ourselves instead of the Lord’s understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6), to worry about all the things of this world (Matthew 6) and get caught up in all the little details. These problems and struggles will continue to exist, don’t get me wrong, but we must continue to remind ourselves of the context in which we fight this battle. We fight a battle that has already been won. We fight against an already defeated sin and death. This is only possible if we believe in the death and resurrection of Christ, this will only ever make sense if we believe in the Gospel that christ died and rose for our sins. So how are we to encourage ourselves? In times of joy and happiness, rejoice and praise God for the work that he has done. Go and live a life showing a faith rooted on christ our sure and steady anchor.
In times of weakness and distress, I firsthand understand how hard it is to turn to God. In times when I doubt God’s plan, and eventually his existence, I ask myself if I believe in the death and resurrection of Christ. When we feel overwhelmed by just how dark and sinful and broken this world is, when we feel helpless and lost, when we feel weak and pathetic, this is when we can best appreciate the sacrifice of Christ. Our world and ourselves are so sinful that only the sacrifice of God himself could change and restore the world to what it should be. But also rejoice in how great God’s mercy and grace is, that despite our state, Jesus would still willingly step up to the cross and die for us. That Jesus would bear the wrath of God, doing more than sparing our souls, but glorifying and perfecting our souls. Continue in your weakness! Turn not to yourself but throw yourself within the arms of the steadfast saviour that is Jesus Christ.
